In the South, "dogwood winter" is the name given to a mid-April cold snap. As you all must know by now, we don't really have dogwoods up here. I see a few here and there, but it's really outside their normal range. So I propose "daffodil winter" as a local equivalent.

I feared I would come back from Missouri to find everything bolted, but the unseasonable coolness had kept everything at about the point where it was when I left, which I suppose is it the one positive thing that can be said of it. Monday's snow seems not to have hurt the daffodils at all and they are very slowly being joined by tulips. And the first trees are budding, those deciduous magnolias which people for whom only evergreen varieties deserve the name call "tulip trees".

Not that I've been out and around that much to see. This was a four-day week for me which an annoying cold has shortened to two-and-a-half. The annoyance derives primarily from uncertainty, since twice I've felt close to beating it only to have it return stronger than before. Is there any point to zinc therapy at this point? I really can't tell. Right now my chief concern is being well for brunch on Sunday so I've cleared the very full day I had booked for tomorrow.

[livejournal.com profile] monshu took today off as well, which was a bit unfortunate, since I was somewhat needy and he just wanted to get his agenda accomplished, so together it had the effect of making a house that is more than big enough feel somehow too small. I tried to read, but I found it hard to concentrate for more than a few pages at a stretch and I hate to watch something like NMTB on the computer when he could be using it to catalog his art collection.

By the way, my ticket for the Met simulcast of Capriccio tomorrow is up for grabs. Nuphy said he'd look for a taker, but I'm not sure what luck he'll have on short notice for a crappy weekend when a lot of people are out of town anyway. So if you can use it, let me know!
