One you lock the target
Holy God am I tired! The only reason I'm not sawing away with
monshu right now is that I am a dork. Specifically, I managed to bring no Tums with me even though I knew (a) I'd be sleeping at his place and my shambles of home; (b) I ran through the bottle I left at his place; and (c) he was taking me out to La Fonda tonight, which means drinking, which means without my powdered limestone I am FUCKED. Oh well: I'm just about to the point where I could even fall asleep propped up against the shams.
Anxiety kept me from sleeping past seven even though it wasn't until 9 a.m. that I had to be there to let the plasterer in. It also kept me from napping at 11:45 when I returned to
monshu's after priming and scraping the bathroom (different parts, of course). Somehow, I managed to rebound before our agent's arrival at 1 p.m. for a whirlwind tour of 12 back-to-back viewings. Even without the caffeine boost from Metropolis about two-thirds of the way through, I think I would've survived.
The upshot is that we have four pretty solid choices and I feel a lot of the pain of getting my house to market has been taken away. The two units we looked at last week as an appetiser dismayed us with their flaws. I didn't want to face up to such massive compromises right off the bat; I wanted to be wowed--and today I was. Any of our top choices promises a mode of existences more luxurious than I could've dreamt up during my last house hunt five years ago.
There's still a lot more distance to cover before we get close to a deal. One of our top choices fell from the itinerary due to the owner's infirmary and is back on for later this week. By then, we should have answers back to some of our most pressing questions about various units, and I suspect the answers may strike one more property from the list. In the meantime, if anything else pops up, we'll do what we can to get a look-see.
monshu's goal is to whittle the candidates down to two and play the sellers off each other, which sounds canny (and should hopefully keep me from getting overly attached to any one place). The most nerve-wracking part from me is that the answers to one of most important questions--how well run is the place?--can only be answered after we make an offer. I can't yet imagine what it would be like to get so invested in a property only to be prepared to walk if, say, the minutes are a hideous minefield of acrimony and malfeasance.
But that's still down the road a bit, and there's plenty of painting left to be done.
