The moon has been quite lovely of late, but nothing prepared me for how spectacular it was last night. When I first saw it, it had been up for probably ten minutes, but it was still red-orange. Very appropriate for Lughnasadh; I've never seen it that dark even on the Moon Festival. Usually, the colour fades fairly soon, but half and hour later it was still several shades darker than the light from the low-pressure sodium lamps. It made me wonder if I'd missed news of a volcanic eruption somewhere in the world.

I was out by the Lake seeking relief from my stuffy rooms and an ice cream bar from a roving vendor. I didn't find much of the former (barely a breeze), but I hit the jackpot with the latter. Not a hundred steps from my door, I ran into my first paletero and discovered at least some of them carry a flavour called "galleta" which is basically ground up Oreos frozen on a stick. I DID NOT NEED TO KNOW THIS! Somehow, I managed to resist buying another from the half-dozen more I saw wandering to the point and back.

I don't think I realised before how much food gets sold in the park there; it's a big more obvious when the crowds have thinned and you can watch the various stands get broken down. There were at least three or four eloteros, one of them with a tremendous roasting pan for refried beans. Also, a sketchy-looking hotdog stand near the harbour, which I'd always assumed sold bait.
