I just had the pleasure of revisting my Amazon Wish List and deleting all those items which I received as gifts. Looks like I'll be making more use of the "hidden" feature in the future in order that this can keep serving its dual purpose as list of suggestions for family and list of reminders for me, lest someone else imitate my stepmother and spend a lot of time and trouble obtaining something for me that I had no intention of making them buy. Not that I don't love having a copy of Moser's The Chinese mosaic of my very own, but that's something I can search for myself in used bookstores.
Of course, with some great gifts comes great responsibility. It's beginning to look like I'll entre the new year with a full list of resolutions, since I've resolved to live up to the privilege of a year's subscription to Cook's illustrated by attempting at least one recipe from every issue. Also, my desire to learn Asian calligraphy may get some stiffening now that I have a proper writing set (inkstone, inkstick, rest, and two brushes). If only the Tibetan Cultural Centre would get back to me about lessons!
I ended up playing elf at the family Christmas, with my ambulant nephews as intermittant helpers. It wasn't easy trying to ensure parity what with the fact that the proud parents didn't seem to be opening anything at all and ECI somehow ended up with more gifts than AWI. At one point, the boys got ahead of me and were simply grabbing presents and asking me, "Who's this for?" At least twice, the tags bore my name, but instead of saying that, I told them, "This is for Uncle Da", which led to much hilarity: ECI went into the room calling "Unca Da! Who's Uncle Da?" until someone pointed in my direction, and AWI did a full circuit as he studied every face, finally settling on mine.
