Boy, my co-worker wasn't kidding when she told me to take my time coming into work today. Half the day is gone, and there's still no indication when our "backbone" (e-mail, library system, local network--you know, trivial crap like that) will be functioning again.

I had called it to say I would be a little delayed, since I was almost out the door this morning when I realised my trenchcoat was over at [livejournal.com profile] monshu's. (This is what makes me happy that I'm not rich enough to have a second or third house: I'd never be able to remember where anything was. Of course, if I were really, it wouldn't matter because I could buy two or three of everything...but enough fantasy already.)

To my surprise, he was still there! That marks the second time in as many weeks that I've swung by his place in the morning and find him at home in his skivvies. When I sleep over, he's always out the door by 6 a.m., so I figure something must be going on. He's like Tom Wilkinson in The Full Monty, going through all the motions of having a job so that his spouse won't worry.

I've got to hand it to him, he's been spinning some involved yarns about office politics and what-not to keep the veil up. He even went to the trouble to "call in" while I was there! And when I called out "YOU LYING BITCH!" while he was "leaving a message for the boss", he acted genuinely annoyed, as if there were actually a machine at the other end recording the call.

It's all so sweet! I can't tell you how special it makes me feel. Me, I just wouldn't have the energy to keep up a charade that long, no matter how much affectionate consideration I milked in the evening from having "a hard day at work". So I plan to keep playing along, at least a little while longer.
