So, after all that juicy build-up, I regret to inform you all that, in the end, Drama! made itself conspicuous only by its complete and total absence. The ex was no-show. (I have my suspicions that he might've been warned off by DS, but I will be unable to confirm those until tomorrow at the earliest. Stay tuned!)

Potential conflict out the window and it was nothing more than a pleasant get-together between old friends and new acquaintances. Besides DS, there was an old buddy from the Bears (we bonded over Buffy back in the early seasons) and his cute[*] and easy-going lover. They've gotten a place in West Rogers Park not far from our own [livejournal.com profile] spookyfruit and [livejournal.com profile] welcomerain. Then there was a genial blond friend of theirs who I think I've met before and a tall bald fellow who popped in briefly on his way home, as I'm wont to do on occasion. (Gawd, it's nice having a corner pub!)

The only moments of tension, in fact, were supplied by the appearance of the Scoutmaster, who was a little out-of-sorts and didn't seem to be mixing well with the others. Or maybe I was misreading their reactions. After a manhattan and a cosmo, of course, I didn't much care. I got to blabber on about Chinese and Japanese a bit, the Scoutmaster got us talking about gentrification, and later we covered naming themes (Everyone in DS's family--from the dog to both parents--has a given name beginning with "D". His parents claim it wasn't planned. I'm so sure!) and card games. You know--pub chat.

I'm just happy to finally have some Bear acquaintances who, for a change, live in my own damn neighbourhood. (I spent some time ragging on HP and the paranoid isolation of the South Side armed camp.)

[*] I had originally mistyped "his cut and easy-going lover", which would've cast a new and less wholesome light on our little gathering.

...kids blasting Doolittle on huge speakers out by the picnic tables for no apparent reason.

I certainly can't fault their taste, but isn't there something a bit odd about that? I mean, wouldn't it be like rocking to The Joker or Seventh Sojourn back in the year that Doolittle first came out? Shouldn't they be playing You could have it so much better or something?
