Jam-packed weekend, full week ahead. Saturday,
monshu and I were preparing to go shopping (outlining my wardrobe for Ring Week, I realised I had Nothing To Wear) when Everybody Called. It took over an hour to get in touch with everyone and nail down plans for the next sixty hours.
That night, I went to Devon with
spookyfruit. Tiffin was filled to bursting and meatless was (duh) a no-go, eliminating Udupi, Mysore Woodlands, Arya Bhavan and every other superior restaurant around; we were casting about for alternatives when he remembered something about a place recommended to him by a cab driver. It turned out to be around the corner on Maplewood, right across from Mughal Bakery, and happens to be prosaically named Sheesh Mahal. Nicer than the average greasy spoon, with a heavily ethnic clientele. The "most authentic pepper chicken in Chicago" (according to Jack's informant) turned out to be more rice than chicken, but tasty all the same. The chicken biryani, however, was not to be believed. Fantastically yummy and, at $3.50 for three pieces, the best food bargain I've seen all year. Avoid the hasheem, though; it's mostly lentils with only a token piece or two of lamb. I've got to go back and try the lamb biryani, though!
Sunday morning, I got done what I could before heading over to
monshu's and wrestling with my taxes. Of course, I was missing the one single piece of information I needed to complete them and send them off, but at least I'm getting a refund for a change. Then it was off to Emperor's Choice for Nuphy's birthday dinner (one of two, but that's what it's like when you reach a birthday a lot of us thought you'd never see). Three bottles of wine later (Hugel Gewürztraminer goes very well with salt-and-pepper seafood!), we made a run to Richwell Market followed by naughtiness chez Nuphy.
Tonight, Nuphy's birthday dinner (second of two) will be at One North on Wacker. Hopefully, we'll get there early enough that we'll actually be able to hold a conversation. Wouldn't that be spiffy? Then comes the first installation in a weeklong operatic extravaganza. Nuphy says it's short--sort of a preface to the later, biggie operas--so I figure it only covers the backstory from the beginning of the first movie.
