The reason people seek good fortune and avoid calamity is that good fortune brings happiness while calamity brings grief. However, people's desires are infinite, and yet the things in the world that can satisfy those desires are finite. Therefore, valuations of good and bad fight inside us, and the problem of which things to acquire and which to reject hangs before us. Consequently, our moments of happiness are few, while our moments of grief are many. This amounts to seeking calamity and avoiding good fortune. How could this be human nature? (Chaoren tai ji, tr. Egan.)
