I've been up for an indefinite amount of time, maybe half an hour. I've got no watch and there's no clock in the bedroom. I tried getting back to sleep, as I'm still very bleary (unfamiliar bed, and the kids playing GTA in the next room till all hours didn't help), but I think it's fairly hopeless--it's already past ten a.m. Chicago time. Besides, I need to get on the stick and make plans with two friends, one of whom is only in town till tomorrow and the other is so busy at his job that the weekends are the only time it's possible to catch him. It'd be much easier if they were still speaking to each other, but alas.
Speaking of old friends, I got the kindest letter today from another, someone who had moved away years ago and who I had no idea was back in town until
monshu and I ran into him at La Fonda the other night. With relationships that have moved into the realm of memory, it's always hard to tell how much you're embellishing them, but his eagerness to get back together and catch seems very genuine.
Monkey Boy also seemed genuinely pleased to get together last night. The last couple times we've gotten together were a little awkward. I remember in particular some badly-veiled sparring during my last extended trip to SF (1999). But last night, he gave me three kisses on the lips and I don't think I annoyed him once. He's looking very cute--and either keeping trim or just gaining weight more slowly than everyone around him.
