I was awful chuffed that I'd had such an easy winter, illnesswise. Good thing I didn't get cocky. For years, I've thought mild winters were the worst, since there was no hard freeze to kill off the buggies. But now I'm wondering, as the current epidemic of arctic air doesn't seem to be agreeing with me. I missed two days last week and I likely won't be in tomorrow.

We had great plans last night: [livejournal.com profile] monshu and I would meet Nuphy and the Swiss Miss (his boyfriend) at One North for dinner, then the oldies would return to their respective lairs while I toughed out Massenet's "Thaïs" with the little one. But I started feeling crummy during my afternoon shift and, when I got back to my workstation, I found that we couldn't get reservations for the restaurant.

So I bagged. I called Nuphs up and told him to take the Swiss Miss himself, who should finally get a taste of Renee Fleming in concert. He wasn't sure how long they'd last, since they were both under the weather, but figured they'd at least make it through the first act. (He snarkily added that one act is enough for Massenet, at least from a musical point of view, since the musical ideas he started with are the ones he'll hang on to till the end.)

[livejournal.com profile] monshu was very put out by his plumbing woes, so I insisted we eat out. It was a pleasant dinner at La Fonda followed by a dud of an evening--he basically hit the sheets as soon as we got back and was sawing logs in no time. I joined before too much later, getting something like nine hours total. (I had a dental appointment first thing this morning and could sleep in.) The fact that I was still tired after all that sleep was not a good sign.

At least I've got a good book: Before I left chez Chenu, I grabbed his copy of Ovid's Metamorphoses. It's just what I'm into right now. I've got some leftover spicy soup from Joy Yee that should help me drain tonight and--best of all--at least 8 pounds of Smithfield ham in the fridge. (Dominick's was having a sale...and I'm ONLY HUMAN!) If I'm home tomorrow, I may get around to roasting the thing.

I don't know what this will do to our weekend plans: dinner tomorrow with [livejournal.com profile] monshu's old friend from Peru, Chinatown saturday with Itako, D&D that afternoon (if, in fact, D&D is scheduled for that afternoon, you planning GENIUSES), and something with [livejournal.com profile] zompist and his wife on Superbowl Sunday.
