I've lived in Chicago with and without a car, and I'm keenly aware of the difference in time and convenience reaching places with and without one. Even under ideal circumstances (direct L ride during rush hour) in my experience transit only reaches about even with driving. (Though parking can make driving much more expensive, of course.) So my license, cold dead hands, etc.
(I'm hoping that by the time age has robbed me of the ability to drive myself, self-driving cars will be able to pick up the slack.)
But I'm guessing that zombie apocalypse is maximum gridlock time. It's not often that I'd give the nod to bicycles, but the combination of faster than a running zombie and able to make it through small openings would probably be hard to beat under the circumstances. (Though you'd want to steal something motorized and enclosed-- preferably armored, if you can find it-- once you got far enough out.)
