I had a similar problem with Pietro di Donato's _Christ in Concrete_ (have you perhaps read that?). As I wrote in a review some years ago:

The book, both dialog and récit, is written in a fantastic lingo; I
cannot tell if it is a literal translation from Italian, or a
poeticized representation of the broken English spoken by the
characters. It is both vulgar and fancy in the extreme:

"I'll lay brick for brick with any son-of-a bum in this state! In
this nation! -- Anybody in the cylindrical u-niverse!"
