It came to me in a dream
Because of the lack of sleep last night [vide infra], I remembered quite a bit of my dreams. Most were utterly forgettable, but one included an inspired decorating idea that could well become the Next Big Thing.
First, a little background. This time, the common trip motive emerged as an off-road detour around a missing chunk of highway. At first, I was on a motorcycle accompanied by a dog at the border between Iowa and Minnesota, but by the end, I was in an SUV with a gay friend crossing into Canada. (Such is the drift that characterises all my phantasms.) We stumbled into a farmstead in the hills and then lost the way upwards. The head of the household, who already had two transients working for him, saw this as an opportunity to get some more cheap labour for his dairy farm and hinted that he'd tell us the best way onward in exchange for a day or two's works. I hawed and fumed, but gave in in the end.
There we were, all in the living room discussing what was to be done inside and outside the house. I said, "At least there's no wallpaper to hang." When I was informed that, in fact, there was a room in need of wallpapering, I ranted at the passéness of it. "Isn't the done thing nowadays to tile the walls? Cover them in linoleum floor tiles?"
Imagine the possibilities! Or parquet flooring? After all, rugs were wall decorations before they were floor coverings. Why not boldly reverse the trend?
