I've always interpreted it as "thrown into shell" (as in "Eierschale" = egg shell, or even "Bananenschale" = banana peel) rather than "thrown into bowl". (I wonder whether "shell" and "Schale" are cognates?)

Looking at LEO, it may be significant that "Schale" is also glossed as "jacket [tech.]" - i.e., something that covers something else.

It's a very common error here using the singular when the number ends in 1, both in Catalan and Spanish.

That's an error!

I can't tell you how many times we were "matxacats" by our teachers for doing so...

I will look for evidence, though (although I pressume it will turn out that this phrase is correct and other uses would be banned)
