I've always interpreted it as "thrown into shell" (as in "Eierschale" = egg shell, or even "Bananenschale" = banana peel) rather than "thrown into bowl". (I wonder whether "shell" and "Schale" are cognates?)

It's a very common error here using the singular when the number ends in 1, both in Catalan and Spanish.

I will look for evidence, though (although I pressume it will turn out that this phrase is correct and other uses would be banned)
