The recipe for sopa de ajo in the cookbook of her grandmother's recipes which e. gave me last week calls for "unos torreznos". I asked her point-blank what a torrezno was and she told me, "I don't know." A likely story! She could only have been trying to weasel out of having to make it for me.

[*] Translation: "Piece of BACON FAT, fried or for frying."

If you can get one at no cost through your mother or something. Otherwise do what I do and use the online version.

In the meantime, I think [livejournal.com profile] bunj's research assignment should be to learn all pork-related terminology past and present, standard and regional before your next trip to Spain. If there's a Leonese slang term for "snack made with meaty bits from a pig's trotter", then, for the benefit of all of us, he needs to know it.
