Notes: I was surprised to realise the other day that not only was this a verb I couldn't recall for any languages but English and German, but it was one for which, even after having looked them up, the equivalents didn't look familiar to me. Do English- and German-speakers really talk about yawning more than other people?

Though I knew that the character 欠 on its own is sometimes read あくび (for example, that's its nickname as the tsukuri in characters like 欧, 歌, 歓, etc.), I never thought to investigate why akubi is usually written with the ateji 欠 "lack" and 伸 "stretch." According to Kojien, 欠伸 can also be read けんしん, in which case it means "yawning and stretching." Mystery solved. Thanks for prompting me to check.
