WotD: sooner or later

  1. früher oder später, über kurz oder lang
  2. vroeg of laat
  3. tarde o temprano
  4. tard o aviat
  5. tôt ou tard, tantôt-bétôt
  6. yn hwyr neu'n hwyrach
  7. luath nó mall
  8. prędzej czy później
  9. 조만간 (早晩間)
  10. 早晚 zǎowǎn, 迟早 chízǎo
Notes: I chose this phrase mainly because I found Louisiana French tantôt-bétôt too appealing not to post. I'm trying not to read too much into the fact that bétôt--cousin to French bientôt--is glossed in my textbook as "afterwhile" [sic] rather than "soon". (The translation given for "soon" is bien vite.) Or the fact that the Iberians put "late" before early. (I think that's due primarily to prosodic considerations.) It's curious that only German and Polish agree with English in favouring the comparative, but not as curious as the Welsh usage, which is literally "late or later".
