Every bit as strange as fiction

Why am I just now--at the age of 37--learning about the Kingdom of Humanity? I came across a website for the Republic of Morac-Songhrati-Meads and was convinced it was all an elabourate hoax; in fact, I'm still not sure it isn't.

Those I blame for my ignorance, well, y'all know who you are.

31, Belgian education, able to find the US on a map. Never heard of either of these places. So don't feel bad.

The whole thing sounds plausible, but I can't find any reliable sources in a brief Google session.

I can find the Spratlys on a map no problem. Until now, though, no one ever told me there was ever anything there.

Since I just now learned about it from you, I blame you, which means you have only yourself to blame.

I vote we both shove the blame off on [livejournal.com profile] richardthinks by unilaterally declaring that anyone who studies pirates should've known about this.

I'm delighted that neutrality of the wikipedia page on the Spratly Islands (which gives geographical data) is disputed.

this should happen all the time, really, givent he ideological construct of the nation and the role of pseudoscientific geography in maintaining it, but this is the firts time I've seen it. lovely.

Hm. My suspicions were aroused slightly by the references to the Udmurtese at the foot of the Struggle for Freedom page. Difficult to disentangle what's hoax and what's not -- especially given the disclaimer page, which amongst all the admitted fictions still seems to imply that some of it is true...

But definitely diverting. The atrocities page is good value, too.
