SSC: Spelling

Fourteen years ago, I misspelled the word "government" on a clerical exam.

Since then, I doubt I've misspelled it more than a handful of times, because whenever I write "government" or "governmental", I check the spelling at least a dozen times before I move on. (I've also gotten in the habit of pronouncing the first n, at least in my head when I'm writing.)

Funny, I mentally pronounce that "n", too.

Shoot, I pronounce it out loud.

The one I have trouble with is "fraudulent" - I keep dropping the first u because the word just looks wrong to me.

I thought it was spelled "gubment". Am I missing something? :)

Yes--the pin-pen merger! It's gubmint. Believe me, I'm counting the days until that's the officially sanctioned spelling.

I love the words Filipino/Filipina as I can never remember to double the L or the P in Phillippines

I am using castellano so much that I have to think hard about double consonants, since most of them disappear. And then there's combos like "mm" in English that turns into "nm" in castellano. Fortunately the Mac has a built-in spell checker that is multi-lingual and works as I type in nearly every application.

Gubernatorial gives me trouble, but it's judgment that bugs me. Or is it judgement? Ugh, my spellchecker won't tell me!

Last time I looked, both were considered correct. By whom, I couldn't say...

So you're telling me there's no judgement yet on the spelling of judgment.

It's a judg[e]ment call.

[identity profile] my-tallest.livejournal.com 2006-12-08 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Perfect.

Now I want a T-shirt:

Spelling: It's really just a judg[e]ment call.

Yeah, that level test from Prefect to Canon is a bitch.
