Freakin' gorgeous outside this morning. I had to go up to the techy section of campus and thought I'd never come back. It was just as beautiful yesterday. There was a moment when I was walking home in the early evening and a cool summer breeze was shaking the branches of a catalpa in bloom; white blossoms were raining down in the clear golden light and I felt a tightness in my chest, like I couldn't quite believe that the world could be so incredibly beautiful. Know what I mean?
Now it's overcast and a little chilly. Oh, well.
But I saw something among the science buildings that I never expected to: Girls, and lots of 'em. In the halls, in the labs, on the sidewalks, in the cafe, they must've outnumbered boys by about two-to-one. Granted, it's about as unscientific a survey as you could imagine, but unless there's some specific reason why all the nerdboys should be away today, it suggests things have changed a lot since I was in school. How d'ya like them apples, Larry Summers?
