torrezno. (De torrar). 1. m. Pedazo de tocino frito o para freír.[*] (Diccionario de la Real Académia Española)
The recipe for sopa de ajo in the cookbook of her grandmother's recipes which e. gave me last week calls for "unos torreznos". I asked her point-blank what a torrezno was and she told me, "I don't know." A likely story! She could only have been trying to weasel out of having to make it for me.

[*] Translation: "Piece of BACON FAT, fried or for frying."
