Mooncakes!

Happy Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, everyone!

So far, the mooncakes I've gotten have been filed with nuts, ham, and lotus seeds rather than electronics, real estate, or fine liquor, but the festival isn't over yet. Colour me hopeful.

As for Chang'e, looks like she's going to be in her full glory tonight. Be sure to make time to take a look.

I KNOW THAT THEY'RE MONDANE...

but the only moon cakes I really like are double yolk red bean. There is a small Chinese Bakery that has the most luscious ones for only $6 each. Once must be very careful... moon cakes can be like the proverbial 5 lbs of Fruitcake that simply gets recycled every year. Good moon cakes are a dream, bad ones are simply yukkie. I was at a large pan Asian supermarket last night and they had durian moon cakes... now that's a tiny niche market.

I can't stand the yolks. Eating easter eggs as a child, I would also throw them out. I do the same thing if the bakery's out of yolkless and I'm forced to buy my mooncakes yolked.

The ones I buy from bakeries like Feida and Chiu Quon have always been excellent. I don't trust the ones in tins.
