I've been verbed!
Today, I ran into one of my neighbours who I only ever see on the way to our respective commutes. It's been half a year since we discussed professions, so he asked me:
"Are you a schoolteacher?"
which, since he works in a jewellery store on North Michigan Avenue (with all that that implies), I took to be the most polite way possible of saying:
You must work someplace where you can get by with dressing cheaply and slovenly on a daily basis, right?
even though he said it without the slightest edge of disdain to his voice.
When I set him straight, he replied:
"Where do you librarian?"
Turns out he knows one of my co-workers, another fastidious and twee gentleman who I find very simpatico, and suggested a three-way. I'd like that, but with all the craziness of the next couple weeks, it may be a while before we'll be able to set up a lunch date all three of us can make.
(I'd type more, but I should be librarianing right now.)
