The year in food

Where has this been all my life? Yeah, a lot of the days listed are the work of industry promotional campaigns, but there are genuine traditional foodways in the mix. Had I discovered this earlier, we could be feasting on simnel cake today. (Grilled marzipan? Count me in!) But instead all we had was leftovers.

I found it while searching for the date of "Carling Sunday", which I was about 90% sure falls next weekend. It's been ages since I've made carlins (they were among the half-identifiable detritus that we cleared out of the fridge in anticipation of New Year's), and there's no good reason for that. It's just too easy to get into a rut and forget that there are about a billion other things you could be cooking or ways to cook things you've already got in the habit of making just one way.

I believe that any food calendar should have Pie Day in it (March 14). Otherwise, we cannot take them seriously. Gwyn (still deciding between classic apple and lemon icebox).
