Wherever a sense of direction comes from, it's not the genes

My parents never cease to impress. Dad actually made it to town by around 11 last night. Then he managed to waste another hour-and-a-half just getting to my house. At least half that time was spent less than two miles away as he drove around the North Side trying to get reception on his phone-based GPS. I know because he called me from Hollywood and Sheridan complaining that LSD had ended. I must've yelled "Take Sheridan north! At Loyola it becomes Devon!" five times into the phone. I mean, directions don't get much more foolproof than that and he still couldn't follow them. The first words out of his mouth were, "I'm sorry, I should've printed out a map from Google." I told him where his room was and went to bed.

Now he's up and showering but of course I feel like shit because I got too little sleep too late. I am really really not looking forward to a four-hour car trip now. I don't know whether it's better to just get moving and pretend I'll sleep in the car or stagger downstairs and try to convince myself that another hour or two at most of disturbed sleep will make any difference. (Of course, assuming I do manage to sleep, then we'll have lost any time advantage gained by him arriving last night instead of midday today.) The damp and grey look of the outdoors is no inducement to rise and shine.

After Williamsburg, This Does Not Surprise Me

It's probably too late now, but make sure you have maps printed of where you're going in Wisconsin. You may want to sleep in the car, but make sure you do it during a stretch when all he has to do is follow the road (on a long stretch of highway, for example).

Until he gets one of those cars that drive by themselves, Dad will always get lost and get angry about it.

Have fun!

Oh, you know I'm not leaving this house without them. Fortunately, it's all highway driving until you get to Green Bay. I just hope things aren't still as screwed up around Milwaukee as they were when we were last there or we'll never leave that city.
