Chicago summed up

Thank you, Internet! This quote has been stuck in my head (in slightly mutated form) since I graduated, but I haven't been able to source it before.
Ellis E. Reid, presiding judge of the First Municipal District of the Cook County Circuit Court, said, "U of C is funny. They're not prejudiced, they're elitist. They have nothing against your color, as long as you're a genius," said Reid, a black 1959 graduate of the school.
Now if I could only find out who described the College as "the largest gathering of neurotic adolescents since the Children's Crusade", I would be content.

What an elite brain you have!

So, what's your favourite quote about the Grey City? (Or would you prefer that not be on the record...)

Actually, the Liebling quote is one of my favorites, if not the #1, thus my shock and delight at running into it just now. There's another really good one, a contemporary of Liebling's, I have to think about the others - trust me this discussion will continue - and perhaps not on the record.... Its funny last night I was skipping through friend entries and blog's and ran into GregorSf's account of a homophobic fundraising call from the Alumni Association for Owen and the AA's subsequent inability to adhere to Do Not Call Restrictions. It was a fully justified jaunt on to a war path.

I thought there was an H.L. Menken quote on Chicago - I think I am mistaken.... Actually there is the Elaine May, Mike Nichols quote: "Hyde Park, Where Black and White are arm in arm against the poor....."
