And speaking of names

Sometimes I wish my parents had had the stones to give me "Maria" as a middle name (since I was born on a Marian feast after all) but they were just not Old Country enough for that. Of course, I had a golden opportunity when it came time to pick my confirmation name and I blew it.

Thank goodness for the Internet, then, where you're free to adopt any names you wish. I was helping someone on LJ with their Welsh recently and they told me (in German) "with that name, you must speak German!" And at first I was like How did you find out my surname? I never mention it here! Then it occurred to me that they were referring to my username, which couldn't possibly be more German. Duh.

Did I already mention that someone left a jar of some instant drink called "Pero" in the staff lounge and labeled it "organic coffee"? The label gives the ingredients as "malted barley, chicory, barley". In other words, it's muckefuck. I keep intending to drink some of myself but forgetting to bring along a mug.

Is it? I have a (German-American) aunt named "Maria", so it never struck me as an odd name to have. I can see why it would be rare among Protestants, but being a Latin form, it's familiar to us Catholics from hymns and prayers if nowhere else.

Nah, there's loads of female protestant (well, you're kind of CofE here by default if you haven't got a different religion already) Marias walking round here. It's seen as prettier and more modern than Mary, Mary is a bit of a middle aged woman name (like Lynne or Susan) . You don't ever see it as a male middle name though.

One of my friends tried to get the confirmation name Elmo on the grounds that it was in the saints book. The priest's words were "Don't take the piss son, do you want to make your mum cry?" and made him pick something sensible. Good old catholic guilt.

But common enough in Southern Germany. That's what I mean about my family not being sufficiently "Old Country". (Most of our German ancestors were Protestants anyway so this would never have been their playbook.)
