And speaking of names

Sometimes I wish my parents had had the stones to give me "Maria" as a middle name (since I was born on a Marian feast after all) but they were just not Old Country enough for that. Of course, I had a golden opportunity when it came time to pick my confirmation name and I blew it.

Thank goodness for the Internet, then, where you're free to adopt any names you wish. I was helping someone on LJ with their Welsh recently and they told me (in German) "with that name, you must speak German!" And at first I was like How did you find out my surname? I never mention it here! Then it occurred to me that they were referring to my username, which couldn't possibly be more German. Duh.

Did I already mention that someone left a jar of some instant drink called "Pero" in the staff lounge and labeled it "organic coffee"? The label gives the ingredients as "malted barley, chicory, barley". In other words, it's muckefuck. I keep intending to drink some of myself but forgetting to bring along a mug.

I almost came up with Cameron as my first name

Until this moment I never had any idea that "muckefuck" was a real word in any language.

I used to drink Postum from time to time, when my coffee consumption would get up too high and give me an acid stomach. I was actually sad to see it go.

Wait, it's gone? I guess the market for it finally died off. DAMN YOU STARBUCKS!

That said, I'm skeptical that there's any meaningful difference between Postum, Pero, Inka, and so on. I'll pick up a jar of one of these some time and try it out.

Would never have made it past the font. In the eyes of the church, my man Cameron's name is "Cameron-Joseph" because there is no "Cameron" in the Martyrologium Romanum.

The ingredient lists for Pero and Postum are totally different, so I'll be interested to see how closely they end up resembling each other.

Now I'm thirsty for 보리차.

As if that would be a problem. My sister was dunked Roman and her first name is my mother's maiden name; her unhyphenated middle name is Anne, after a beloved Irish auntie. My aunt, my sister's godmother, swears that old Father Flanagan baptized her as Therese, the nearest sounding saint's name to the surname.

This use of 'Maria' is a rarity in the UK and Ireland, and Anglo-America. No?

[identity profile] muckefuck.livejournal.com 2009-11-25 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it? I have a (German-American) aunt named "Maria", so it never struck me as an odd name to have. I can see why it would be rare among Protestants, but being a Latin form, it's familiar to us Catholics from hymns and prayers if nowhere else.

Must've tithed extra for that privilege!

[identity profile] danbearnyc.livejournal.com 2009-11-25 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Dunno. The priest had refused to marry my parents because my father was 'Piscop and he refused to sign that he was going to raise the bairns as Romans. That the first daughter was being baptized Roman was no doubt to his Portaloaise Popery, so I'm sure he agreed to the odd name, then did it the correct way once he had the child in his hoary hands. Mwahahahahaha! Ahem.

my father was 'Piscop

Da geht ein Licht an!

I'm sure I've revealed this tidbit before - I even went to 'Piscop seminary for a time where I managed to pour hot tea all over Desmond Tutu's lap. His response was most unChristian.

I recall the Tutu story but not its setting. Time for a booster cup of Pero!

C'est si!

And for a time rather conveniently located only one block from both the Spike and the Eagle's Nest.

Nah, there's loads of female protestant (well, you're kind of CofE here by default if you haven't got a different religion already) Marias walking round here. It's seen as prettier and more modern than Mary, Mary is a bit of a middle aged woman name (like Lynne or Susan) . You don't ever see it as a male middle name though.

One of my friends tried to get the confirmation name Elmo on the grounds that it was in the saints book. The priest's words were "Don't take the piss son, do you want to make your mum cry?" and made him pick something sensible. Good old catholic guilt.

i meant as a male middle name

[identity profile] muckefuck.livejournal.com 2009-11-25 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
But common enough in Southern Germany. That's what I mean about my family not being sufficiently "Old Country". (Most of our German ancestors were Protestants anyway so this would never have been their playbook.)

Gib's zu: Den Benutzernamen hast du nur gewählt, weil er auf englisch falsch verstanden werden kann! ;-)
