Adam Smith, IIRC, only wrote about beef, but his conclusion was that it must be the finest thing, since all the greatest and most enlightened people surrounded themselves with it.

But then, he was a Scot. Had he been a middle-European (or Chinese), pork would certainly have been the common coin of the Wealth of Nations.
