  2. borrador - eraser That's one meaning, but Gabo is using it in the sense of "rough draft".
  3. beca - grant? Odd word for that, isn't it? I can't relate it to anything; must see what Corominas has to say.
  4. callejero - street person? Anything having to do with the street; as a noun, usually "street guide".
  5. chaleco - a kind of coat? Yes--a waistcoat!
  6. gatear - to act like a cat?? In the specific sense of clambering up something or going about on all fours.
  7. terciopelo - sounds familiar Velvet ("three hairs", presumably because it consists of two warps and a weft)
  8. trocar - I want to think it has to do with Catalan "trucar" but that's "llamar" unless... One theory call these cognates, but Corominas considers trocar onomatopoetic. The primary meaning is "to exchange, to transact", possibly from the sound of the handshake after business was concluded.
