To my mind, the basic hot toddy is rum, brandy, or whisky mixed with hot water and a teaspoon or so of sugar or honey. I don't think of other combinations of alcohol with a sweetened hot liquid (e.g. mulled cider, caffè corretto, etc.) as "toddies", although according to some technical definitions they are.
