To be honest some of us desperately need the glosses. I wasted enough time in university struggling with Chaucer and Shakespeare taught by instructors who wanted us to feel the poetry when I couldn't understand a damned word of the text. Joyce is easier, sure, but I for one probably never could have guessed that he meant "glass of porter." Honest.
