The deadliest sin of all

I know a lot of you went to Gay Pride celebrations today and I certainly don't want to piss all over your positive experiences. But, last night, [livejournal.com profile] lhn pointed out something that perfectly summed up my attitude to the event: A neon sign of the word "pride" in pink underlined in rainbow.

The "i" was replaced with a mock-up of an MGD can.

After reading [livejournal.com profile] bitterlawngnome's suggestion about throwing our support behind the marches that really need it, I decided that if I wasn't going to be in some small town or hostile foreign city for Pride Day, then I was interested in celebrating it at all. But, after a week of conference hosting, [livejournal.com profile] monshu was looking forward to submerging himself in a sea of screaming fags, and I figured it would be boorish not to allow myself to be dragged along.

In the end, I was spared by the weather: The first rainy Pride Day I can remember in my nearly twenty years in Chicago. (There was once where we had a brief shower in the morning, but it cleared up and not a drop fell on the parade or rally.) That plus the fact that [livejournal.com profile] monshu was still completely bushed from Saturday's banquet sealed the deal. Instead of a day wasted getting tanked in the hot sun, it was a day wasted watching atrocious films on television.

But nowadays there are also gay restaurants, gay gyms, and gay bookstores, not to mention gay social and professional organisations. The sponsorship reflects the fact that a disproportionate number of gays (at least among those who attend the parades) are heavy recreational drinkers.

Thanks for giving me a ring Saturday and sorry I missed y'all. Next time for sure!
