More towards today's theme

Can you tell I'm counting the minutes until I can leave early for [livejournal.com profile] monshu's party?

At lunch today, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the cafeteria had live music: A Mexican jazz duo. 'Cause you know, when I think "Mexico", I think "jazz". You've gotta give 'em props for thinking outside the box, though. I hope this means an oompah band next Mardi Gras!

Last night, I discovered that the Spanish word for "tamale" is...tamal. No <e>. The English form must be analogical: The plural is tamales, take off the plural s and you have tamale, right? Except Spanish has a rule whereby nouns and adjectives ending in a consonant add -es, not just -s. So now I feel like kind of a dork for every time I've asked for a [ta'male]. Rather like a German saying Happy-End with punctilious English pronunciation, isn't it?

No worries. I'm half-Mexican, and I was in my teens before my mom broke me of the habit of saying tamale when speaking English!
