When it comes to the Christmas season, I'm a traditionalist. Some people start playing carols and hanging tinsel before the Thanksgiving turkey is completely cold. Most of the world is on board by December 1st, but I hold out for the beginning of the liturgical season of Advent. Often, it starts with the last week of November, but this year it's the shortest it can be due to Christmas falling on a Monday. This makes the day before simultaneously Christmas Eve Day and the Fourth Sunday in Advent.

My Adventskranz has been up for only a few hours; I'll light the first Kerze when I head back there. I never get a Weihnachtsbaum, since in my tradition it only goes up am Wochenende vor Weihnachten and, by then, I'm usually already out of town; I'm only even around to light the fourth candle fast jedes zweite Jahr. For a while, I thought about doing some baking, but my sister and sister-in-law have beat me to the punch and there's only so much Kleingebäck it's wise to have around in den Weihnachtsferien. But what I am doing is re-importing Weihnachtslieder into my iPod.

I figured that, dem Eulchen zuliebe, I could take das Bekannteste of these songs, and dissect the verses for her, one on each Adventssonntag. (Actually, there are sechs Strophen ingesamt, but only half of these are commonly sung.)
Stille Nacht! Heil'ge Nacht!
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute hoch heilige Paar.
Holder Knab' im lockigen Haar,
Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlafe in himmlischer Ruh!
