It's not just a question of fluency but of social expectations as well. Switching from English to another language is always a marked choice. Speaking it at Wednesday's gathering, for instance, would've meant excluding most other attendees from joining the conversation. And many German-speakers in this country are self-conscious about using their language in public (although, granted, this is generally not true of those who make a career of teaching the language).
