I don't know enough about Leguizamo's character--the actor is Puerto Rican, but is Martin?--or the customs of that milieu. But you have to agree that it comes off somewhat differently than, say, Robin Williams' Armand making the same threat to Hank Azaria's Agador in the execrable Birdcage.)
I was more bothered by the fact that Martin just materialised at exactly the moment it was most convenient for the plot. All I could think of is what a fucking fortune it would've been to catch a same-day flight from LA and how could he afford it on a sous-chef's salary?
