If you read more right-leaning sources, ahem, you wouldn't be so surprised. Reason is often skeptical of the police (an expression of power by the state). The Daily Caller, a mostly-routine-partisan attacks-on-Obama organ, runs a regular feature on police excesses (they also run a lot about beauty pageants and celebrity pin-ups; taste aside, this suggests that they know the police feature is also clickbait for their readers).

Of course, sometimes, as with Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, it turns out the alleged victim was -- indisputably, scientifically -- the aggressor.

If anyone wants to know what really happened to Gray, they have to wait for the coroner's report and any follow-up forensics. Did the police intentionally injure him? Did incidental contact aggravate an unseen and unforeseeable pre-existing condition? Did he hurt himself in a freak accident?

The activists do not care about those answers* or about him, really -- he is just an excuse for their protests just as the protests are a convenient cover for criminal (not political and certainly not revolutionary!) looting and destruction.

* Case in point, the Daily Beast ran a column from some idiot with no medical training and no first-hand knowledge contending that, instead of showing he injured himself, reports that Gray was thrashing around inside the police van proved, obviously, that he was already in medical distress. There is no way to know that without the autopsy.
