My coworker did muse, "I wonder how that works with donors." On the one hand, it's an area studies department where fieldwork in often challenging conditions is common. But on the other, he intimated in his remarks that its survival had been touch-and-go for a while. I wouldn't think the appearance of casualness would be much of an asset in that situation, but maybe he was celebrating his ultimate success.
