In my imagination, they are not gay, just inadvertently sincere. They are overcome by the tenderness of the moment, and in just a few seconds they are going to jump up, look at each other, and both shout "NO HOMO!!!" In a lighthearted way.
Sort of like the kiss in The Full Monty.
