No thoughts on Bert and Ernie, because I never thought of them as anything but unsexed (but male-gendered) puppet pals when I was young enough to be in the SS demo, and they weren't Muppet Show cadre when I was an adolescent, so I never thought of them. Then they were gay and Bert was Osama when the Web started up, but I've never really identified meme-Bert and meme-Ernie with my childhood puppet friends, just like I've never identified Chris Pine as Captain Kirk.
